Co-Parenting Course

This guidebook accompanies CDE's Children in Between an Internet - and video-based program.  This program covers common situations in which children are put in the middle of their parents' conflicts.  It makes parents aware of these situations and the effects of their behavior on children.  It illustrates effective and ineffective methods parents use to deal with conflict.

This guidebook will help you build on your awareness and practice skills depicted in the program.  The exercises will make it easier for you to apply these skills with your ex-partner and children.  We highly recommend that you complete the exercises and also ask your children to complete them, either on their own or with you, if they are old enough to do so.

This booklet goes in depth to examine the effects that parents' separation or divorce have on children.  It also addresses what parents can and should do to minimize those negative effects, and maximize the changes that children will grow up as healthy, happy, and well-adjusted as possible. Specifically, we will cover important topics such as:

  • how children experience the disruption of family breakups;
  • how you can help your children through this difficult process;
  • where to turn for resources to improve your relationships with your children during and after the family breakup;
  • how to improve your communication skills so you can reduce conflict with your ex-spouse or ex-partner; and
  • what to do when domestic violence and safety issues are issues.
